Microsoft Expression Encoder is a high-resolution video editing and screen capture tool. Microsoft Expression Encode can also be used to convert videos from one encoding to another. Expression Encoder also provides basic video editing features such as trimming and cutting. Expression Encoder is available in three versions Pro edition, Pro edition without proprietary codecs and an Express edition. The Pro edition is fully featured and has all codecs. There is another Pro version that omits royalty incurring codecs such as Dolby Digital, AVCHD, MPEG-2, AAC and H.264. The express edition is free, but it does not support advanced features such as live streaming. Microsoft Expression Encoder is available on Windows operating systems only.

Microsoft Expression Encoder has excellent screen capture capabilities. You can capture the whole screen, specific windows or a custom screen area. You can also configure the output to a resolution or target device of your choice. Microsoft Expression Encoder has live broadcasting capabilities. Microsoft Expression Encoder works together with IIS web server to stream video and audio using Silverlight. You can broadcast in either Standard Definition or High Definition. You can also control the bitrate used for broadcasting. The available bitrates are 300, 400 and 800 Kbps.
